Ilona Bontenbal is a PhD student at the University of Jyväskylä, in Finland. She has a Master’s Degree in sociology, history and political science. The focus of her PhD research is on the migration and development nexus. In her research, she is looking at ways that migration and migrants can affect societal change from the viewpoint of social remittances. Before joining the SIRIUS project, she has worked on a project related to Supporting Immigrants in Higher Education in Finland (SIHME) and a project focusing on the Protecting Mobility through Improving Labour Rights Enforcement in Europe (PROMO). Her research interests include migration and labour markets, the integration of migrants, the migration and development nexus, remittances and transnationalism.
