
During the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York (13 - 27 September 2022), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, and Dr. Muhammad Al-Jasser, President of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) launched the innovative initiative to support refugees, the first-of-its-kind Global Islamic Fund for Refugees.
The two organizations have decided to contribute with an initial capital of $100 million to sustain the million of people that around the world are forced to live their countries.
At the presentation, Dr. Al Rabiah declared that "Amid increasing numbers of crises around the world, the OIC region contains the largest number of refugees in the world, and we all realize and bear the responsibility that we have to provide everything that refugees and displaced people need to live a safe, healthy and decent life."
Filippo Grandi, commended the launch in this way: “Over 100 million people have fled for safety due to the devastating effects of war, conflict, persecution, discrimination and the climate emergency with increasing needs for humanitarian assistance and sustainable solutions.”
