Giulia Lagana has written an opinion piece in EU Observer about how current EU agricultural policies is the culprit for creating inhumane conditions in which refugees and migrants are used as a cheap labour force. Currently, the EU's answer to such conditions is to shut down abusive conditions in the hope that this would motivate employers to use legal labour. However, according to Giuila, this does not stop these practices. Instead, by changing EU agricultural laws regarding how produce is grown, harvested and sold, could have a greater impact on the problem of abusive employment practices.
